For many centuries, people around the world have admired the beauty of Venetian glass mirrors. Beautiful works of art that hang in royal residences and even palaces are the result of a craft that evolved on a small Italian island. A group of Italian craftsmen ultimately started producing mirrors that caught the interest of the nobles in Europe in the latter stages of the Renaissance when the trade of blowing glass and making mirrors was passed down from father to son.
Individual pieces of hand-blown glass are used to create the mirrors, which are then joined to a timber frame using small screws and rosette covers. Because of its thinness, clarity, and vibrant colours, the glass was exceptional. On the underside of the glass, patterns were frequently etched. Until recently, mirrors had a practical use by adding light to spaces with little natural light. Candlestick holders were frequently included into the bottom frame of the mirrors. The goal of the mirror was to reflect the candles’ light, illuminating the space. As European nobles came to appreciate the beauty of Venetian mirrors, they commissioned artisans to create even more elaborate mirrors so they could impress their acquaintances with their wealth.
Some of these antique Venetian mirrors can still be found in museums and private residences across Europe. And these masterpieces are still being made by artisans in Italy today. Fortunately, there are also less expensive replicas available in a variety of designs and price points that would complement both classic and more contemporary settings. There are both quite elaborate Venetian glass mirrors that evoke Renaissance versions and fairly basic variations that merely use the fundamental concepts of etched glass for a modern appearance.
The centre of a living or dining area can be a huge Venetian mirror. Mirrors that are smaller might be useful in a bathroom or bedroom. Another excellent location to put such a mirror is at the entranceway. Modern Venetian glass mirrors have the same dual function as their Renaissance counterparts. If you hang one in your home, more light will enter and the space will appear much larger than it actually is. You can admire the mirror’s splendour and, if you so choose, dazzle your companions. Perhaps this is the reason why these mirrors have been in demand for so long.
